Cimafunk’s “El Alimento” amongst best Spanish language albums of the yr, in line with Rolling Stone

The second album by Cuban musician Cimafunk, entitled El Alimento, was chosen by Rolling Stone magazine in third place amongst one of the best Spanish language albums of 2021, as a part of a listing made up of 35 phonograms.

“Cimafunk’s incandescent sophomore album, El Alimento, unfolds as a series of intersections between Afro-Cuban musical tradition and stateside masters of funk, hip-hop and rock & roll,” said the celebrated publication.

The specialized media highlighted the native of Pinar del Río’s collaborations on this album with legends from the international scene, which has strengthened the resonance of Cimafunk’s work.

“The elastic bounce of ‘Funk Aspirin,’ with George Clinton, brings a euphoric comparsa aboard the Funkadelic mothership, while a swirling mélange of rumba and sticky bass lines provide a wealthy sonic canvas for veteran rapper Lupe Fiasco’s nimble word play,” the Rolling Stone reviewed.

“Loving nods to Afro-Cuban percussion abound on ‘No Me Alcanza,’ performed with Havana legends Los Papines, while the saturated synths of ‘Estoy Pa’ Eso’ wink at Sign O’ the Times-era Prince,” the text added.

“Cimafunk’s roots act as a prismatic lens of musical memory, refracting strife and indefatigable Cuban resilience across the album, most emphatically on the resistance anthem “Esto Es Cuba,’” the specialized publication concluded.

Produced by Grammy Award winner Jack Splash, El Alimento includes songs comparable to “Caramelo” and “Salvaje,” the latter recorded with famous pianist Chucho Valdés.

Within the Rolling Stone selection this album is simply preceded by El Madrileño, by the Spanish C. Tangana and Vice Versa, by the Puerto Rican reggaeton musician Rauw Alejandro.

About his work and his second album, Cimafunk told OnCuba: “My thing is to provide music. Ultimately it is just not about me, but about giving value to Cuban music. The repercussion doesn’t make much sense to me. Our music is 4 chords; a basic rhythm and Cuban texts. The result’s because we’re Cubans. Americans prefer it, Europeans prefer it too; but, that’s because we supply Cuban music in our blood.”

“Our platform has been the island’s public. What we defend are the concepts of our contemporary music. That got here naturally to me, but now I’m more aware of my work. I let myself be carried away in order that the themes flow, to chill out,” the artist added.
