ON Wednesday, February 7, 2024, roughly twenty (20) farmers and extension officers across the island participated in an informative cabbage training session on the Union Demonstration Farm.

The training was a collaboration between the Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Rural Development, under the “Enhancement of the Efficiency within the Production-Distribution Supply Chain of the Fruit and Vegetable Sector (Seven Crops Project)”.

The farmers were educated on the overall production of cabbages in Saint Lucia: one of the best husbandry practices to use throughout the life cycle, pest and disease management, essentially the most ideal time of the yr for cultivation to cut back pest infestation, and essentially the most suitable temperatures for growing cabbages for optimum harvests.

Moreover, they were enlightened on the practice of flood irrigation techniques when cultivating cabbages. This practice, even though it is just not very commonly utilized in Saint Lucia in cabbage production, has the general good thing about good harvesting results and saves the farmer money and time.

The farmers who were present on the training were each those that currently cultivate cabbages and those that have a keen interest within the production although they currently grow other crops. The Summer Autumn variety gave one of the best performance among the many three varieties, and, subsequently, the farmers were all given seeds from that variety to check out themselves.

Varieties of cabbage for the trial were Bright Top, Summer Autumn, and Scarlet.
